Reflecting on 2024: A Year of Resilience
The past year was filled with a busy schedule and incredible performances, but it was also a year of deep loss and reflection for our band. We mourn the passing of two beloved current members:

These musicians were not just part of our band but also part of our family. Their passion, talent, and dedication will forever inspire us as we continue to honor their legacy through our music and education.
A Busy Year of Breakthroughs and Performances
We’re thrilled to share that in February 2024, Elaine Yuzuriha stepped into the role of band manager, filling the “big shoes” of long-time band manager Laura Baxter. In addition, Elaine took on the role of interim band director in August when Al became ill. Elaine has brought incredible energy and vision to our group, and we’re excited about the road ahead under her leadership.
In 2024, the Minidoka Swing Band performed 18 events, bringing a renewed emphasis on sharing the experiences of Japanese Americans interned during World War II while sharing the timeless sound of swing. Included were performances at the Patricia Reser Center for the Performing Arts, at the grand opening of the Woodland (WA) Community Library, at an Embassy Suites Portland Airport holiday party, and 2 performances for the Portland Lindy Society at Norse Hall. We also had our first panel discussion on the history of swing music and dance in the WWII Japanese American internment camps.
